Climate

Despite its proximity to the equator, Arusha’s elevation of 1,400 metres (4,600ft) on the southern slopes of Mount Meru keeps temperatures relatively low and alleviates humidity. Cool dry air is prevalent for much of the year. The temperature ranges between 13 and 30 degrees Celsius with an average around 25 degrees. It has distinct wet and dry seasons, and experiences an eastern prevailing wind from the Indian Ocean, a couple of hundred miles east.

Currency

The unit of currency is the Tanzania shilling (TZS). The average exchange rate to the dollar is TZS 2,200 please inquire for current rates at the time of your trip. Foreign exchange can easily be done in large towns, mainly in banks and forex bureaus. It takes longer to change money in the banks than in the bureau de change. With dollars, make sure that you bring new notes not older than series year 2006. Most places will give a lower, flat rate for older notes (some places will not buy them at all).
Several banks – including Standard Chartered, CRDB, the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), FMBE, EXIM, and Barclays – have ATM machines around the country that allow you to withdraw cash from your Visa and/or MasterCard accounts. Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge provides exchange facilities however the applicable rate would be negotiated on daily basis.
